Pacquiao is Mayweather's natural predator, otherwise Floyd is PG rated

On Wednesday, Floyd kill Joy Mayweather Jr. attained the supposedly mature age of 33.

You Biblical scholars who read beyond the Ring magazine may note that was how old Jesus Christ was when he was taken to the gallows under Pontius Pilate’s direction.

No, don’t go there. I’m not advocating that Mayweather be crucified and I’m not being blashpemous because, like all of us (even my wretched self), Mayweather is a Child of God.

Jesus spoke in homilies, in parables and allegories. Mayweather, even on his natal day, continues to spew venomous poison about the Lord’s Humble Servant, Manny Pacquiao.

(Right about now, I expect a lightning bolt to come through the computer screen.)

(Not to digress but, in another mental twist while speaking to allhiphop.com, Mayweather in one breath labels Shane Mosley “a C Lister” and then refers to him as a Hall Of Fame quality boxer. Can this guy do contortions or what, he’s like the Rubber Man.)

I’m late with Money May’s birthday gift but I am think that the Hip Hop Kid might appreciate a funky Wagnalls meaning a proper dictionary.

I’d adivse Floyd to look up “ordinary” because he keeps misusing the word when discussing Pacman.

“Manny Pacquiao was just an ordinary fighter and once he got over 25, 26, he became extraordinary. That doesn’t happen in the sport of boxing so it has to be something. I started off good in my career and all the way through my career I’ve been dominating. I started off good and became great but you don’t start off ordinary and become extraordinary. If Manny Pacquiao has nothing to hide, I never saw a man who didn’t want to take a $25 million dollar drug test.”

Floyd’s doubters are many as thius magazine cover line shows (Primer Round)

For his second big word, I’d love for L’il Floyd to look up “adversity” because, at the end of the day, that is what we remember most about our boxing icons.

(See Mr. Lois on why Manny and Floyd should emulate Oscar insofar as taking on ALL comers.)

(See Mr. Heritage on whether Clottey has proper strategy to upset Megamanny.)

When we think of Muhammad Ali, don’t we first think of his huge upset of Feb. 25, 1964 (incredibly, 46 years ago today) in Miami Beach when he “shook up the world” by beating thuggish Charles “Sonny” Liston. and don’t we always harken back to another big upset, when he roped a big dope named George Foreman in Zaire?

Will Mayweather ever overcome adversity in a fight the way Cassius Clay did against “Ursa Major” Charles “Sonny” Liston?

What shall we harken back to about Mayweather if he fails to fight natural archrival Pacman?

How he ducked and dodged various fighters who probably could not carry his gym bag?

It’s a tribute to his natural ring gifts that Mayweather hasn’t faced much adversity but it diminishes his ultimate place in history as well.

Where’s the magic moment like when something on Liston’s gloves temporarily blinded Cassius Clay and Angelo Dundee literally shoved him out of the corner and told him to run from the menacing Liston until his sight began to clear up?

There’s been no such adversarial test for Mayweather.

So far, he’s been strictly a frontunner.

Pacquiao can give him this examination if he turns a boxing match into a fight.

Pacquiao is capable of doing that and even Mayweather, in his heart of hearts, knows this.

Finally, an “ordinary” fighter does not rebound from KO losses early on his career to achieve one stunning success after another even as he goes up in weight.

An “ordinary” fighter does not become the face of boxing after dragging himself off the canvas.

Yet Pacquiao has done all this. a lesser man would’ve been mentally wiped out by these defeats.

An era of truly random testing is clearly coming to boxing and it could be done sans any jabbing needles as the urine testing protocols improve.

But that time may arrive after both Pacman and Mayweather are truly retired.

If Mayweather wants to be recalled as the guy who always had it his way, if he settles for that, then he will get his just desserrts.

His career, his legal will be filed under “PG” which stands for Pretty Boy was pretty good.

All Time Good or all Time great?

Pacquiao’s reach may exceed his grasp. Mayweather reach is questionable.

When he’s sitting on the rocking chair, talking to his grandchildren, it will be a shame if “woulda, coulda, shoulda” is all that Floyd can say in relation to matching his skills against his obvious and most dangerous predator.

The guy who reaches for the moon, even if he fails, will be remembered more fondly.

Come may 2, I guess we’ll start seeing the picture more clearly.

Will Mayweather dare to be great or will he be content with what he’s done?

Sure, he and Shane will fill up the MGM Grand on may 1 with 16,000 in the arena. They deserve no less.

But Pacman is fighting before a possible 40,000 in Dallas on March 13.

He’s become an international icon and people eat up his story like popcorn.

Will Mayweather dare to be great or is he smug and satisfied?

He can’t crow too much about whipping “a C Lister,” can he?

The jury is out.

18 Strangest Airports in the World

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Have you ever scene that really cheap-looking TV movie version of the Stephen King book The Langoliers with David Morse? well, it involves an airplane flying through some sort of inter-dimensional vortex, and when it lands at its destination the passengers find themselves in this eerily uninhabited airport somehow outside of time. They’re eventually mostly eaten by poorly computer animated things that gobble up leftover time or something. Point is: that was a weird airport. Popular Mechanics stuck to the real world for their 18 strangest Airports in the World, and we find the approach to Toncontin International Airport in Honduras to be especially terrifying. Canada's relief efforts in Haiti move to stabilization

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

OTTAWA — the focus of Canadian relief efforts in quake-ravaged Haiti is ready to move from emergency response to stabilization and reconstruction, a coalition of Canadian aid agencies says.

The Humanitarian Coalition — comprised of CARE Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Quebec and Save the Children — said Thursday it is closing its “active” fundraising campaign and its toll-free donation line has shutdown.

“We’ve been working with our partners on the ground . . . providing a range of services that were desperately needed both in the rescue and immediate relief phase,” said Robert Fox, of Oxfam Canada. “We’re bridging towards longer-term reconstruction efforts.”

Approximately $13 million in donations have been made to the coalition.

Meanwhile, individual Canadian donations totalled $128 million during the push for funds following the Jan. 12 earthquake, which killed as many as 300,000 people and left another 1.5 million homeless.

One of the most pressing issues facing the battered nation is the upcoming rainy season, which typically begins in early April and could bring on a health crisis if disease and infection were to spread rapidly through the makeshift tent cities housing the homeless.

“With the rainy season, there’s a tremendous risk of a spike in vulnerability of people,” said Fox.

During a two-day trip to Haiti last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Canada is committed to providing funds for the long-term reconstruction of the country in spite of tight finances. the Harper government has allocated $555 million over five years in aid for Haiti, making it the second largest recipient of Canadian foreign aid, after Afghanistan.

LBSU MBB: Pacific Gets Over

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Reports from LBSU & Sports Information Director Todd Miles

T.J. Robinsonput together another solid effort for Long Beach State but Pacific’s defensive pressure neutralized the rest of the 49ers in a 61-51 Tiger win Saturday night.

Robinson finished with 19 points, on 9-of-14 shooting, and eight rebounds, but the rest of the 49ers combined to make just 10-of-32 field goals. nobody other than Robinson had more than two field goals. the Beach (14-15, 7-8 big West) finished making just 41.3 percent of its shots, including a dismal 2-of-16 from three and 11-of-19 from the free throw line.

Pacific also struggled making just 42 percent from the field, but the Tigers (18-10, 10-4 big West) were 4-of-13 from three and 15-of-21 from the free throw line.

Despite the offensive struggles, Long Beach State trailed by just three with 4:30 to play, but then came the back breaker. Demetrece Young banked in a 3-pointer and was fouled byStephan Gilling. Young went to the line and completed the four-point play to push the lead to 52-45. Long Beach State would never get closer than six the rest of the way.

“They are a good defensive team,” LBSU head coachDan Monsonsaid. “The most disappointing thing is because they do a good job of guarding us, we were doing a good job of guarding them, but the frustration of not being able to score leaked into our defense the last couple minutes of the game.”

Young led Pacific with 16 points. Sam Willard added 12 points and seven boards for the Tigers.Casper Warehad nine points for the 49ers, whileArturas Lazdauskasled the Beach with nine boards.

The Beach jumped out to an early lead taking the action at the Tigers. LBSU’s Anderson got fouled twice in the first minute and a half making 2-of-4 free throws and Ware canned a pair of free throws two minutes into the game to build a 4-0 lead. LBSU pushed it to 8-0 with 16:42 to play on a pair of Robinson hoops forcing Pacific to burn a timeout.

The Tigers responded going on a 23-8 run over the next 8:38 to take a 23-16 lead. Demetrece Young sparked the UOP run scoring all 10 of his points in the stretch.

The 49ers rallied down the stretch outscoring Pacific 11-6 in the final 6:44 of the half to trail by just two at the break. Robinson led the 49ers with 12 first half points on 6-of-8 shootings. the rest of the 49ers managed to make just three shots on 17 attempts as the Beach shot just 36 percent in the first half. Minus Robinson, LBSU made just 17.6 percent. the 49ers did make eight free throws (on 13 attempts), five more than Pacific, to keep the game tight. both teams struggled from three in the first half with LBSU making 1-of-8 and Pacific answering with just 2-of-8.

In the second half, neither team led by more than five until Young’s four-point play.

Michael W. Smith has highest hopes for Haiti relief effort

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Michael W. Smith hopes that the “tremendous buzz” surrounding his song “Come Together Now” will translate into millions of dollars raised to aid Haiti quake victims.

The song, which was written by Smith, David Mullen and Cindy Morgan and performed by a chorus of several dozen Nashville music stars including Wynonna, Vince Gill and Amy Grant, is available through all digital retailers. Proceeds from the single will go to designated charity and relief work through Samaritan’s Purse and the American Red Cross.

“I think Haiti has been one reason for a lot of us to come together and count our blessings and know that every day is a gift,”Smith said at Thursday’s news conference to announce nominations for the Dove Awards.

“When something like this happens, I think it can rock you to your core, and you start to see the brevity of life and you start to think, ‘What the heck am I doing with my life?’ you start to be more proactive about reaching out to somebody who needs a hand just little things. you don’t have to cross the Atlantic to be a missionary.”

The music video for “Come Together Now” can be seen at tennessean.com/music. the song also will be the lead track on the Healing4Haiti compilation album, which will be released on March 2.

Psychic’s show postponed

Sylvia Browne, the world-renowned psychic who was a frequent guest on The Montel Williams Show, has postponed tonight’s performance because of illness.

The rescheduled show is April 24 at the Acuff Theatre near Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center. Tickets sold for tonight’s show will be honored at the new date, and refunds will be available at point of purchase.

At the April show, Browne will perform 200-300 psychic readings for audience members and discuss the importance of being physically, mentally and morally healthy.

“I’m a psychic, but I like to think of myself a spiritual teacher, too,” Browne said in a recent phone interview. “The one thing I’ve noticed with a lot of psychics is that they don’t give credit to God, and I think you have to. I think everything comes from God. I think most of us are just tubes anyway. If we’re going to give a message, we are nothing but a tube, and I always try to get to as many people as I can.”

Browne holds a raffle at each show to determine who will receive readings.

“I wouldn’t keep this up if people didn’t tell me I saved their lives, or ‘I now believe in God’ or ‘I was thinking about suicide and now I’m not,’ ” she said. “I think that’s what keeps me going.”

TobyMac’s ‘Tonight’ starts strong

TobyMac’s fourth solo album, Tonight, is his highest solo career debut. the album sold more than 78,000 units in its first week of issue, entering the Billboard Top 200 at No. 6 and topping the Christian SoundScan chart.

The lead single, “City on our Knees,” was nominated for a Grammy and became the fastest-selling track in TobyMac’s career, with more than 225,000 downloads.

Snider says new album might be the last for a bit

It’s a good thing that Todd Snider’s latest recession-inspired disc, The Excitement Plan, is such a fine listen it might be the last album the East Nashville musician puts out for a while. Snider told The Tennessean he might “study songwriting under some other people for a few years, and then reapproach it.”

“Whatever argument I was in, I feel like I’m not in it anymore,” he says. “Songwriting is traditionally for the unhappy, and most of them spend a good deal of time with their head in the oven. I wouldn’t mind trying sanity out for a few years.”

Luckily, Snider isn’t taking a break from performing he’s playing at TPAC’s James K. Polk Theater (505 Deaderick St., 782-4000) on Saturday. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $22.50-$40 through TPAC’s box office, by visiting tpac.org or by calling 615782-4040.

Snider guarantees “a 90-minute distraction from your impending doom.”

Get a ‘plus one’ at Lloyd’s show

Bill Lloyd has been a guitar-wielding fixture on the Nashville music scene for a long and good time. lately he’s most reliably been seen on stages as an integral part of The Long Players, a collective that renders live versions of classic albums.

At 9 tonight, Lloyd will deliver some cover tunes, but also a healthy dose of originals in his plus One gig at Family Wash, 2038 Greenwood Ave. in Nashville, 226-6070.

Lloyd expects some pals to show up as well, and each of them will play an original and a cover. See, “plus one.”

There’s no cover charge, but mind the tip jar.

Tiger Woods gets Support from Poll to Play for U.S. in Olympics

Feb. 26 (Bloomberg) — Tiger Woods would have the supportof 69 percent of Americans if he represented the U.S. in golf atthe Olympic Games, a survey found.

Just less than a quarter of respondents to the Seton HallUniversity sports poll weren’t in favor of the golfer playing ona U.S. team, while 75 percent of men and 63 percent of womensaid they’d have no problem with him being included.

“Tiger still has work to do to win back the public,” RickGentile, the director of the poll, said in a statement. “Butthe Tiger camp should be pleased by the strong number supportinghis being a potential member of the team.”

Woods, 34, last week apologized in a live televisionaddress for his marital infidelity and “repeated irresponsiblebehavior.” the world’s top-ranked player in December said hewas taking an indefinite break from the sport after thepublication of often-lurid details about his private lifefollowing a one-vehicle car crash outside his Florida home onThanksgiving night.

The International Olympic Committee voted in October toinclude golf in the program for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiroand the following edition four years later.

The Olympics were watched by 79 percent of respondents ontelevision at night, while 10 percent viewed daytime coverage.the Internet accounted for 8 percent of users and 2 percent gottheir information on the Games from newspapers.

“Newspapers are sending teams of journalists andphotographers to the Games and trailing badly in importance,”Gentile said. “Four times as many people get their news onlineas from hard-copy newspapers.”

Sunday, February 28th, 2010
