The Escondido City Council has slashed $1 million in funding from police and fire services and code enforcement.
The Council voted 3-2 for the cuts Wednesday night, opting to spare libraries, swimming pools and the East Valley Community Center because of pleas from residents, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Escondido is projecting a $10.5 million gap in its $72.9 million general fund budget this fiscal year, according to the newspaper. The city made drastic cuts at the beginning of the fiscal year, but not enough to offset the continued decline of Escondido’s sales tax revenues.
An undetermined number of employees will be laid off in the next three months because of Wednesday’s cuts, the Union-Tribune reported. Over the past three years, a total of 25 city workers have been laid off in Escondido, which currently employs about 750 people.
