“Chuck Norris” Bot Infects Routers and DSL Adapters | VX50.com

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Czech researchers have uncovered a botnet running on broadband routers and DSL adapters. Click here for the original Czech report.

The research was the work of Jan Vykopal, head of the security project of Masaryk University, along with experts from the Brno Military Academy and the Defence Ministry. They said the main purpose of the botnet was to steal the usual sensitive data: bank accounts, e-mail inboxes, etc. Vykopal added that the botnet could be used for attacking other systems.

Botnets on devices like this are not new. I wrote about a very similar one almost a year ago. Research on the threat goes back further; it was brought up in 2007 by researcher and big-game botnet hunter Gadi Evron a couple of articles on CircleID.

This bot, named “Chuck Norris” for a comment in the source code referring to the American actor, star of many action films and Walker, Texas Ranger on TV. like “psyb0t” from a year ago it attacks devices remotely by guessing at default passwords and can infect devices based on MIPS chips running Linux. the botnet covers Europe and South America and reaches into China. In an e-mail interview with IDG’s Bob McMillan, Vykopal said that the bot also exploits a known vulnerability in certain D-Link Systems devices.

Compromising a router has advantages for an attacker: by being connected directly to the broadband network you are not blocked by any security software on the PCs; users don’t update software often on routers; and you are closer to the network itself. but there are disadvantages: and power-cycling the router probably removes the bot. It’s technically feasible for the bot to write itself to firmware, but there’s no evidence any of them are doing this. a bot at the router could also be used as an infection vector for systems inside it.

As to the claim of the bot being used to steal confidential data, how that works can be tricky. a conventional bot on the PC can just monitor the keyboard for the data, but if the session is SSL-protected then a router-based bot will only see encrypted packets. the better way to execute an attack from a bot would be to use the fact that the router is a DNS proxy for the local network and redirect users to false sites, but this can be detected by many different methods.

Evron noted in his 2007 articles that ISPs would not do anything about the problems of weak security in broadband gateway devices until they had to. perhaps this is the time they have to do something.

Happy Birthday Chuck Norris @ Pepper Spray, Stun Guns, and Tasers …

Carlos Ray “Chuck” Norris was born March 10, 1940. An American martial artist and actor, he served in the United States Air Force and has founded Chun Kuk do martial arts. the roundhouse kick is Chuck Norris’ trademark move and was a six-time undefeated World Professional Middle Weight Karate Champion.

Chuck Norris has appeared in a number of action films, one of his more famous ones is Way of the Dragon, also starring Bruce Lee and the Missing in Action and Delta Force series. he also played the starring role in Walker, Texas Ranger from 1993 to 2001 on television. As a result of his “tough guy” image, Chuck Norris facts began in 2005, an Internet phenomenon referencing various implausible feats of strength to Norris.

In celebration of his birthday, I’d like to share some of my favorite Chuck Norris facts:

“Thousands of years ago Chuck Norris came across a grizzly bear. the bear became so terrified that it fled north into the arctic and all of its descendants now have white hair.”

“Contrary to Al Gore’s findings, there is no such thing as global warming. Chuck Norris was simply cold, so he turned the sun up.”

Daily TWiP – International Day of Awesomeness and Chuck Norris' birthday

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Welcome to Daily TWiP, your daily dose of all the holidays, historical observances, etc., we couldn’t cram into The Week in Preview.

Every once in a while, we here at Daily TWiP stumble upon a holiday that is so wonderfully TWiPpable that we almost weep tears of joy. The International Day of Awesomeness, which the creator decided should coincide with the birthday of the incredibly awesome and near-mythic action hero Chuck Norris, is one of these holidays.

The International Day of Awesomeness is a relatively recent holiday (this is the third year it will be celebrated) and began, as many fun things do, with bantering between coworkers.

Freddie Maneiro, an intern, suggested that a celebration be held in honor of the awesomeness of his coworker, Kevin Lawver. Lawver’s awesomeness was a running joke amongst his coworkers, and Lawver decided that there should be a holiday to celebrate awesomeness in all its various forms.

The official tagline of the International Day of Awesomeness is that, while no one is perfect, everyone can be awesome. And today, you are encouraged to do exactly that. be awesome, do awesome things, and appreciate the awesomeness of others.

If you’re uncertain as to what true awesomeness is, we invite you to explore the mythology of Chuck Norris. Norris himself is thoroughly human (in spite of his amazing roundhouse kicks), but thanks to the mysterious powers of the Internet, he has been credited with all kinds of legendary accomplishments, many of which have been collected at ChuckNorrisFacts.com.

Here are a few of our favorites, which we hope will inspire you to pursue your own unique feats of awesomeness:

- Chuck Norris can lead a horse to water AND make it drink.

- Chuck Norris can slam a revolving door.

- Chuck Norris counted to infinity – twice.

- Chuck Norris’ hand is the only hand that can beat a Royal Flush.

- Chuck Norris can divide by zero.

- Chuck Norris once kicked a horse in the chin. Its descendants are known today as giraffes.

Feeling pumped to get out there and be awesome? we certainly are. Prepare yourself, pi – today is the day we finally make you into a rational number.

This Exists: The Chuck Norris-Backed Tea Party Picture Book

Friday, February 26th, 2010

It might just be the book to knock that pesky Fox News liberal’s Arguing with Idiots off the best-seller list once and for all. the Tea Party enthusiasts over at World Net Daily are announcing the release of the literary milestone Don’t Tread on us! Signs of a 21st Century Political Awakening, a photo book chronicling the adventures of the Tea Party movement as it spread across the nation fighting socialism and creating some of the most unintentionally hilarious political posters in American history. the best part? the book comes with a foreword from Chuck Norris, the George Washington of American martial arts films.

From the WND announcement:

“It is with great pride that WND Books introduces ‘Don’t Tread on US!’ It’s complete with 192 full-color pages of pictures devoted to the stirring, inspiring and spot-on signs witnessed at the tea-party rallies erupting around the nation,” said Joseph Farah, founder and CEO of WorldNetDaily.com. “The spirit of the patriot – so integral and unique to America’s DNA – is alive on the pages of this beautiful book.”

The previews the leaders of this project offer us promise a collection of some amazing grassroots art – posters with an array of messages, from “ACORN crusher: time to bust up these nuts!” to “1984 is not an instruction manual!” and every great American Tea Party philosophy in between. Here is an inspiring, though sadly Norris-less, patriotic montage of what to expect from Don’t Tread on Us:
