Andrew takes to the center-stage stool for James Morrison’s You Give Me Something. He looks much more comfortable this week, and this song is much better suited to his kind of reinterpretation. On the other hand, it’s the first time I’ve really gotten the Danny Gokey comparisons with Andrew, and I think Danny would have mopped the floor with Andrew’s version (once he learned the song). Decent, but hardly great.
“That wasn’t the vibe for you tonight,” Randy says. “You’re not a soul singer.”
Ellen disagrees: “You set the bar so high with the Paula Abdul song (Straight Up), that’s the problem. We’re always going to be disappointed.”
Kara thinks he played it too safe this week. “I like when you surprise us — and we need another big surprise from you. Right now.”
Simon says the fact that he’s picked the wrong song two consecutive weeks signals a problem. “There are billions of songs out there you could sing. … I’m disappointed, still, in you.”
