Twitter, Facebook Warn Users of Email Password Scams

March 20th, 2010

Twitter has followed Facebook in warning users to avoid malicious emails with attachments that claim to provide a new password.

Opening such an attachment can unleash malware that may ultimately crack the passwords on the user’s computer beyond social media accounts, warn Internet security firms.

“Remember, Twitter doesn’t send emails asking you to download or open attachments. Don’t fall for that trap!” the micro-blogging site posted on its Twitter.com/safety page.

Twitter then provides a link to its “Keeping your Account Secure” guidelines page.

Facebook issued its own warning earlier in the week about “another spoofed email going around” that claims it’s from the social media site and asks the recipient to open an attachment to receive a new password. Facebook says to delete such emails and warn friends of the scam.

“Remember that Facebook will never send you a new password in an attachment,” said the post on Facebook’s security page.

McAfee’s Security Insights Blog describes the attachments in the Facebook emails as “potentially very dangerous considering that there are over 400 million Facebook users who could fall for this scam.”

The attachment is a “password stealer” that installs when the user clicks on it, McAfee said.

“Once installed, the password stealer can potentially access any username and password combination utilized on that computer, not just for the user’s Facebook account,” the online security firm said.

One clue that signals a user of a spam email is poor grammar and awkward phrases, such as the greeting: “Dear user of facebook.”

Gary Peterson: Omar Samhan comes up big, and so do his Saint …

March 20th, 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Five minutes into Saint Mary’s first-round NCAA Tournament game against Richmond, center Omar Samhan was on pace for 80 points. Coach Randy Bennett, cagey customer that he is, wasn’t investing in any such whimsy.

“They weren’t going to let him get 50,” he said.

Equally certain was that Saint Mary’s would have to get other players involved on offense. in the heady moments after the Gaels’ 80-71 victory, their first in the NCAA Tournament in 51 years, Bennett insisted that would have happened organically.

“They were going to bring help (defensively),” Bennett said, “and help, if Omar makes good decisions, gets other guys involved.”

But this makes a better story:

With 6:31 to play in the first half, Samhan picked up his third foul. as he exited the game, he had scored 14 of his team’s 22 points. and after the two free throws that resulted from his foul, the Gaels trailed by four.

How bad would it get without their big fella?

“It was a big point in the game,” guard Mickey McConnell said. “We were going inside a lot up until then. we kind of (got) on a run without Omar.”

Saint Mary’s outscored Richmond 14-10 for the rest of the half, at which point the Gaels were fully engaged. McConnell was casting moonbeams from beyond the 3-point arc. Clint Steindl drained three treys. Five different Gaels — including four who aren’t named Omar — got to the line, where Saint Mary’s outscored

When Samhan picked up his fourth foul midway through the second half? no big deal. the Gaels scored 11 of the next 14 points and led by double digits until a so-what Richmond basket at the horn.

So while it might be dabbling in hyperbole to suggest the loss of their best player served as a catalyst for Saint Mary’s, it’s close enough to the truth to illustrate this team’s fundamental appeal.

“It’s awesome,” said Bennett, who took two other Saint Mary’s teams to the tournament without success. “You’re just proud of your guys. they have to believe. they have all year, and I’m real proud of them.”

Bennett keeps suggesting that for all the talent he’s had at the school, this might be his best team. the further it goes, the fewer qualifiers he uses. and while he insists that he has any number of players capable of authoring game-defining moments, on Thursday these made better stories:

The first was Beau Levesque, a 6-foot-5 freshman who came in after Samhan’s third foul. his five points, five rebounds and one assist do a poor job of quantifying the quality of his game and tell you nothing about his attitude and energy. the 13 minutes he played tell you everything about the unlikely nature of his contributions — they were more than he had played in Saint Mary’s previous 10 games combined, and tied his career high set Dec. 30 against Howard.

It was a matchup thing, Bennett said. “Looking back,” he said, “maybe I should have been playing him all year.”

Then there were the sequences, before and after halftime, that McConnell dropped on Richmond point guard and Atlantic 10 Conference player of the year Kevin Anderson. in the first, McConnell burned as much of the shot clock as he could. then after a flurry of between-the-legs dribbles and jab steps at Anderson, McConnell launched a cloud-dusting 3-pointer.

Ten seconds remained in the half. Anderson blew upcourt and drove the lane, but the defense collapsed and he airballed a short floater.

On Saint Mary’s first possession of the second half, McConnell went at Anderson again, was fouled and made two free throws. Anderson, who scored 11 points in the first half, was barely heard from again until scoring twice in the final anticlimactic minute.

“I don’t think he lost his confidence as much as we just tried to focus on keeping him out of the paint,” McConnell said when it was suggested he might have crept inside Anderson’s head. “I think it was more our defensive focus. we just tried to make him shoot tough shots. I think we did a pretty good job with that.”

Clearly these guys are better at creating a good story than telling it. except for Samhan, of course. he finished with 29 points and 12 boards in 28 lively minutes, helping Saint Mary’s to an astonishing 40-17 rebounding advantage.

“Coming into the year nobody thought we were going to be good,” he said. “We love that nobody expects us to do it.”

That, too, may be flirting with hyperbole. Subject to change, the way these guys are going.

Nation's Jews Abandon Facebook and Twitter, One Day Per Week …

March 20th, 2010

It hasn’t officially been rebranded, of course; God is notoriously conservative about updating that Bible of his. But, as reported by the New York Times, Reboot, a nonprofit Jewish think tank, has come up with a new version of Shabbat that is not only restive but sort of cheekily appropriate. And if you notice a lack of Jews on the internet, starting about now, you’ll know why.

Shabbat, observed sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, usually involves traditional Jewish meals (including bread, wine, and meat and/or fish), prayers, lighting candles, and spending relaxing time with family and friends, but it’s the myriad restrictions that are best known (and loathed by every bored 13-year-old who just wants his Game Boy). It’s prohibited to turn electronic devices on or off, as well as to travel in cars, trains, buses, and planes. there are workarounds for all of that stuff (like elevators that stop at every floor, or lights on an automatic timer) but many Jews have simply stopped bothering with the more intrusive aspects of Shabbat.

Reboot’s “Sabbath Manifesto” takes a different approach. instead of observing traditional modes of rest on Shabbat, it recommends we use that day to unplug ourselves from our connected lives. It’s a fun twist on the traditional ban on electronics, and it’s a good idea for anybody, anyway: taking one day to remember what life is like apart from Twitter, Facebook, email, and all the rest can only be good for our perspective and mental stability (let alone our social lives here in the real world).

Today (right now, actually: I’ve scheduled this article to publish at 7:07 PM EST, sundown in new York City), Reboot is hosting the first “National Day of Unplugging,” which lasts the length of traditional Shabbat: sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. The group is hoping this big press push will encourage more obedience of their “Sabbath Manifesto,” which is basically a weekly version of the National Day of Unplugging.

The Sabbath Manifesto, in full:

  1. Avoid technology.
  2. Connect with loved ones [note: presumably not via technology]
  3. Nurture your health.
  4. Get outside.
  5. Avoid commerce.
  6. Light candles.
  7. Drink wine.
  8. Eat bread.
  9. Find silence.
  10. Give back.

The philosophy goes beyond just a list of rules; Reboot is taking a more pro-active promotional path:

Reboot’s organizers are promoting the National Day of Unplugging via (what else?) Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. But the manifesto also emphasizes direct personal interaction. As such, Reboot has planned intimate gatherings this weekend in new York and Los Angeles, where members will dine and share their views on the manifesto. Cellphones must be checked at the door, where they’ll “sleep” in miniature sleeping bags.

Look at that! Miniature sleeping bags for cellphones! see, everyone? Shabbat can be adorable too! And that adorability is why you might see a distinct lack of Jews around on the internet tonight and tomorrow. Looking at my watch, it’s just about time for me to head out as well: Shabbat Shalom, everyone.

NCAA March Madness Brings in More Viewers Online | Jennifer …

March 20th, 2010

The NCAA basketball tournament, with its array of games played at conflicting times during the workday, has long been discussed as an ideal sporting event for online coverage. And based on numbers out today from CBSSports.com, more people are indeed watching games on streaming video this year. On the 2010 tournament’s first day, CBS says, the games drew 3 million unique visitors to on-demand video, about 11 percent more than on the first day in 2009.

The network said people watched 3.4 million hours of live streaming video and audio, a 21 percent increase from last year’s first day. the most-watched game online was the double-overtime Florida vs. BYU game Thursday afternoon.

In Between The Lines ~: ~ 1st Day of Spring

March 20th, 2010

Every night on Facebook, I ask the above question. It’s amazing to me how truly powerful being grateful is. I have learned and loved the shares received by so many from that question each night. and what is interesting is that the comments given aren’t from something huge – but from small and simple, yet profound and meaningful things in life: “watching my children sleep” … “re-connecting with a long lost friend” … “a helping hand” … the list goes on….

So! to keep up the habit, I’m going to post my gratitudes on here – when I can and I invite you to as well. one of my most favorite quotes on gratitude is:

“Gratitude is the axe for the frozen sea inside us.”

Yes, it truly is. Give it a try and you will believe for yourself!

2-25-10: It’s been awhile since I posted my Gratitude here. I do every night on FB and if I remember, in my Gratitude Journal…anyway – today I am grateful for constant 2nd chances to make things right. and that a loving Father in Heaven never gives up on me to try one more time. : )

2-8-10: Grateful for dear friends, family & support! : )

2-2-10: Today, my gratitude is photography – memories – inspiration and forever families.

2-1-10: Today I am super grateful that January is over. Also, our family night spent together this evening – sharing, discussing major decisions. and I’m truly grateful for the best friends on this side of heaven anyone could ever have!

1-18-10 Today got my house cleaned up and everything put back from Christmas. but the best thing is meeting up w/one of my life-long friends for over 23 years w/her kids and ours! great visiting – love them so much!! : )

1-17-10 Grateful for the rain we are receiving and also time spent with some really good friends as a family tonight! It’s moments like these that truly make me grateful for what’s most important in my life … what truly matters.

1-14-10 I am truly grateful for connecting with dear family and friends thru our amazing technology we have today – whether it be text, email, Facebook or the “old school” way … the telephone. Love that there can be a thousand miles distance, yet only a button away on the computer or the phone!

1-13-10 Today I am grateful for the drizzly cozy weather, amazing clouds in the sky, my camera and how much my family loved my homemade creamy chicken/potato/veggie soup! : )

Guinness® BBQ Sauce – Tasty Kitchen

March 20th, 2010

I created this sauce for my St. Patty’s Day broiled lamb chops (see my recipe box), but it turned out to be so good that I think it warrants its own post. it has a good balance of sweet and savory, but maintains the unmistakable flavor of Guinness®. My kids even liked it, which is a great testimony for an on-the-fly recipe.

  • 1-½ cup Guinness® Extra Stout
  • ½ cups Chili Sauce (I used Heinz)
  • ½ cups Brown Sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Red Wine Vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon Pickapeppa Sauce (in the Hot Sauce Section)
  • 1 Tablespoon Honey
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Salt

Add the beer and garlic salt to a medium sauce pan and whisk to combine.

Heat the pan over medium heat, add the remaining ingredients, and whisk to combine.

Simmer until the sauce is reduced by half (about 15-20 minutes) and set aside to cool.

Brush it on your carnage of choice during the last 5-10 minutes of cooking.

(Makes about 1 1/4 cups.)
