In twitosphere, are the funny, famous in it for tweets, or do they also follow? – Metro Canada

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Twitter is so many things to so many people: infomercial, backyard fence, brain dump. the funny, famous, famous for the wrong reasons or simply very useful have thousands of followers, but who do THEY follow?

Deposed “Tonight Show” star Conan O’Brien follows only one person, @LovelyButton, a seemingly nice and happy 19-year-old named Sarah Killen in rural Michigan. Her own list of followers shot way up when O’Brien recently plucked her from the twitosphere because he felt bad about not following anyone as he madly tweets away his contractual obligation to stay off television for a few months.

Certainly not the most out-of-whack in that department, the movie critic, blogger, book writer and cancer survivor Roger Ebert, who lost his voice as a result of his illness, tweets regularly to 112,201 followers. the Oscars helped bump up his follower feed as he tweeted away on awards night.

Ebert’s a busy guy online, but he follows only 59 on the massively popular micro-blogging tool.

“For me, it’s a matter of signal to noise ratio,” Ebert said in an email of his Twitter portfolio. “I don’t care about what anybody is doing moment to moment. I want to learn something, or be entertained. the twits I follow are a virtual Algonquin round Table.”

Yes, he calls them twits. He’s kidding. So who gets thumbs-up from @ebertchicago? Here’s five:

Calgary stay-at-home mom of three, blogger, recently joined Ben Stiller, Sarah Silverman, Diablo Cody and 136 other Twitter users for “Night of 140 Tweets” to benefit the Haiti relief effort. Each recited a signature tweet before a live audience in Hollywood.

Why he follows: “@kellyoxford is way funny.”

One of Oxford’s tweets: “I don’t think vomiting is a side effect of pregnancy, I think it’s a side effect of knowing there’s a human growing in you.”

Playboy founder, star of E! reality series “The Girls Next Door.”

Why he follows: “@hughhefner is enjoying an idyllic golden age, watching a movie every night, playing (board) games in the Game House with many girlfriends, although Crystal Harris is his One true love.”

One of Hefner’s tweets: “My 12 year separation from Kimberly Conrad ends in March with all economic concerns resolved. Free. Free at last.”

Novelist, blogger, Kennedy gave up the “let’s all be fabulous in Prada” new York lifestyle for new digs in Miami.

Why he follows: “@feminista09 has an attitude, is funny, irreverent.”

One of Kennedy’s tweets: @juliaallison how could any1 tell Kate Winslet, after they’re married (!), that he can’t be w/one person for the rest his life?”

Creator of the films “Eraserhead” and “Blue Velvet,” co-creator of “Twin Peaks,” woodworker.

Why he follows: “@DAVID_LYNCH is steadily enigmatic. he doesn’t share a lot of his inner thinking.”

One of Lynch’s tweets: “Someone asked if I liked wool as well as wood. the closest I’ve come to this is many times, I’ve felt like a sheep in today’s world.”

Fantastical writer whose heyday was in the 1930s, known for his “web-work” of twisting plots in pulp and mystery, died in 1967, a fan tweets under his name.

Why he follows: “@HarrySKeeler is the reincarnation of the oddest and most prolific Chicago novelist of all time. he tweets verbatim from his countless and lurid mysteries: ‘He tricked me into crossing the city today in a distinctive clown suit.”‘

One of the site’s tweets: “He was finger-man in that snatch-as well as inside wire. and I’ve got him by the nerts.”

Craig Ferguson's Cheeky Twitter Debut | The Wrap

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Craig Ferguson is now on Twitter — and he’s just as cheeky online as he is on-air.

“Can I say fuck on this thing?” the CBS “Late Late Show” host tweeted Monday evening around 9:45 p.m., less than 12 hours after first signing on to the mircoblogging service.

Then, two minutes later: “Oh this is too awesome. Fuckity fuckity heck. (don’t want to go too far).”

Among the early highlights of the feed from @craigyferg (whose authenticity was confirmed by a CBS pr rep):

– “I follow no one. except Dave I suppose. or the local news. or the smell of ham.”
– “Watching the who @ the superbowl made me sad. like watching my grampa play the spoons.”
– “I’m concerned I watch too much Mythbusters. I may need geek rehab.”

Craiggers isn’t the first late-night host on Twitter.

NBC’s Jimmy Fallon jumped on to the service even before his show premiered last year. He’s now got more than 2.4 million followers and has sent out nearly 2,000 tweets since joining.

Ferguson announced his Twitter debut on his show early Tuesday morning. no surprise, his follower count started skyrocketing, jumping by 2000 in the space of a few minutes.

The always self-deprecating Ferguson summed up the importance of his Twitter bow thusly:

“The fact that I am on twitter probably means it’s on the way out,” he wrote.

StopTweet: A Customizable Spam Blocker for Twitter

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

We just tried it on an account and caught around 50 spam followers; pretty exciting, no?

Here’s how it works. You tell StopTweet what behavior you think is spammy by defining a few important parameters. the first parameter is follower-to-friend ratios, which StopTweet considers on a scale of 1 to 100%. I personally think it’s sketchy when none of the people you follow have returned the favor. I like my friends to be engaged and engaging.

Next, you tell StopTweet how many tweets you’d like your followers to have on a scale of zero to 30. this won’t work on the spambots that ping 500 people with the same “LOOK AT THIS CRAZY BRITNEY VIDEO!!1!”, but it’ll certainly get rid of inactive accounts and users who aren’t really adding much value to your network.

It works for followers and friends, and you can take one of three actions (unfollow, block or report) on the account StopTweet finds. StopTweet also comes with three convenient presets for light, medium and aggressive scans.

The app also has a tab to see your own list of spammer accounts, but we weren’t able to click through due to a possible bug in the very new app.

“We didn’t like any of the applications that were already out there. They were all too complicated for the average Twitter user,” wrote creator Joi Company, which also created Twitstatus, a keyword-based Twitter widget generator. “The application is extremely easy to use, and allows you to only block who you want to block without hassle. On top of all this, it’s free. most of the apps we found charge a monthly or yearly fee. We do not.”

We think StopTweet is a genuinely useful app, and we recommend that you give it a shot and let us know how it works for you.
