New York food trucks turn to Twitter

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Whether it’s fomenting revolution or telling people what you had for breakfast microblogging service Twitter seems to have it all.

Now, New York City’s enterprising mobile food vendors are using the instant messaging website to help their hoards of hungry followers stay tuned to their favorite delicacies.

Kim Ima, owner of the Treats Truck, which serves up caramel creme sandwiches, sugar cookies with icing, and other diet busting delights, uses Twitter to stay in touch with her 3,000 fans.

“For someone like Kim with St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Wednesday, she wasn’t sure if she was going to park here. so with Twitter she was able to provide location updates and we knew where to find her,” said customer EJ Cory.

Twitter allows users to enter messages from a computer or mobile phone, which are instantly transmitted to other users who choose to read their “tweets.”

The service riles some, who say it encourages people to post irrelevant details about their daily lives, such as what they had for breakfast.

There are about 3,000 licensed food vending trucks in new York City, according the Street Vendor Project, representing a sizable niche for Twitter.

Kenny Lao parks his Rickshaw Dumpling truck next to the Treats Truck most Fridays. He has been tweeting since his truck first hit the streets for business and says Twitter is an ideal tool to keep in touch with his 5,000 followers.

“People really depend on us to be at certain locations on every day of the week and they get super-duper excited for dumpling day and this is the best way for us to tell them,” he said.

Twitter, founded in 2006, is free for its millions of users and its founders are still trying to turn the loss-making enterprise into a cash cow.

Last year Twitter hit the headlines for the role it played in helping demonstrators in Iran organize anti-government protests. the White House famously asked Twitter to delay scheduled maintenance during the protests so demonstrators could stay connected.

Demi Moore used Twitter to help stop a potential suicide.

Early Friday, a man near Orlando tweeted Moore with the disturbing message that he was “about to go hang” himself. “I have no reason to live anymore,” the man wrote, later adding, “No one cares if I die or not.”

Moore, whose @mrskutcher account has more than 2.5 million Twitter followers, quickly asked, “R U rlly asking 4 help?”

The man replied, “Yes.”

Moore’s rapid response and high visibility may have helped avert tragedy.

Actress Nia Vardalos (@NiaVardalos) also saw the man’s desperate tweet and alerted a suicide prevention hotline and Florida authorities.

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office says law enforcement received two phone calls from the West Coast reporting the suicide threat.

Deputies went to a home and took a (thankfully) uninjured juvenile male to a local hospital.

Moore and husband Ashton Kutcher are both very engaged in social media. Today it may have helped save a young life.

  • Didn’t something similar happen to Demi a little while ago? I feel like it was another suicide threat, also on Twitter.

  • I was thinking the same. thought I was having a Deja-vu thing.

  • This is why I love Demi Moore. she’s so sweet to people. at least she saw the tweet and responded. A lot of people won’t do that especially when they are online. That’s what is sad.

  • Good Job! She’s one of the few who are still paying attention to the world around them.

Dunkin' Donuts Tracking Twitter In Effort To Turn Tweets Into …

    Friday, March 19th, 2010

Twitter represents a gold mine of marketing possibilities, but the vast majority of firms haven’t figured out how to transform those 140-character tweets into sales.

One exception is mega-brand Dunkin’ Donuts, which has started to track dollars flowing from Twitter by tallying the number of people who click through from a “Win Free Coffee for a Year Offer” on Twitter. Users who enroll in the “DD Perks” program are entered into a company database. the company has a quantitative value for database members, although it will not disclose that number or the Twitter click-through rate.

Yet while Dunkin’ has become a dominant brand on Twitter with over 46,000 followers, most firms are in the early stages of puzzling out how best to monetize a website whose passionate users crank out an average of 50 million tweets each day.

Still, a growing number of companies are seeking out Twitter for marketing purposes: 35 percent or 173 of Fortune 500 companies have active Twitter accounts, according to a recent study about corporate Twitter usage in 2009 from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Center for Marketing Research. the study called company growth on Twitter “explosive.”

Twitter can be a lonely place – War on Error – Blogs – Technology …

    Monday, March 15th, 2010

At last someone has taken a peek into what really goes on inside social networking phenomenon Twitter, and dug up something surprising. far from being busy and gregarious, a lot of the time it’s remarkably friendless and silent.

After analysing 19 million accounts (a respectable chunk of the site’s total) security company Barracuda found that only 21 percent of that number fell into its very modest definition of being ‘active’ users. The bar was set very low because to qualify a user only had to have more than 10 followers, to follow back 10 or more others, and to have made more than 10 or more tweets.

Looked at from the other end, half of Twitter users follow five or fewer people, twenty percent follow nobody, 74 percent are followed by fewer than 10 others, and 73 percent have made fewer than 10 tweets.

There can be a number of interpretations of these figures (including the fact that twitter has a problem with bogus accounts), but there is no getting away from the conclusion that a hardcore of Twitter users are doing most of socialising.

There is a continent of people on Twitter who talk to very few people, are followed by even fewer, and who say almost nothing. Twitter’s next innovation should virtual tumbleweed. meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum are the celebs and fashionable opinion formers, a tiny elite that are followed by millions, talk incessantly, and feel the need to follow almost nobody.

Intriguingly, this almost perfectly mirrors the processes Malcolm Gladwell discussed in his famous book, The Tipping Point, which looked at how change happens in human affairs as diverse as the sudden sales surge in Hush Puppies, crime rates, and the development of children’s TV programmes.

Most fashions, most tipping points in fact, happen because of tiny elites, are then spread by the hyper-social, and absorbed eventually down the line by the mass of quiet unfriendly types who are happy to follow. Twitter confirms Gladwell’s analysis and suggests that as much as being a tool for sociability, Twitter is a reflection of the fact that society itself can be a pretty sullen place.

Humans are social, it is often said, but not that social. a few are social while the rest rely on them to continue to be so. we have probably evolved to be innately suspicious, to put a lot of emphasis on trust, and yet to be fascinated by the freaks who are not.

I am certainly from the anti-social league because I tend to see the danger of social media, not the opportunity. That said, I did enjoy hearing what cyclist Lance Armstrong had for breakfast – along with 1,302,534 other sceptics.

Sarah Killen’s life has been turned upside down by the stunt. last week she had three Twitter followers, now she has 20,000.

Her new-found popularity also means she has been given a new computer and offers of help paying for a dress and drinks for her wedding in September.

O’Brien, the former “Tonight Show” host, left NBC in a deal that barred him from TV appearances for several months.

He has taken to Twitter to reach the masses during his exile and has amassed more than a half-million followers.

But he had not been following the feeds of anyone else and decided to change that by picking one person.

O’Brien posted: “I’ve decided to follow someone at random. she likes peanut butter and gummy dinosaurs. Sarah Killen, your life is about to change.”

Since then Killen, who lives in rural Michigan, has picked up followers at a rate of 150 per minute and been inundated by requests for media interviews.

She said: “It’s totally nuts.” Her fiance John Slowik Jr said he now wants O’Brien to be best man at the wedding.

In keeping with O’Brien’s knack for unorthodox choices, recentlyshowcased in his decision to pick a random Michigan woman as theonly person he would follow on Twitter, O’Brien will launch thetour not in Los Angeles or new York but in Eugene, Oregon.

O’Brien will be joined by longtime sidekick Andy Richter and theformer “Tonight Show” band.

He will visit theaters in at least 20 states and 2 Canadianprovinces.

“It was either a massive 30-city tour or start helping out aroundthe house” said O’Brien, who has been sharing experiences from hispost-”Tonight” life at home through his recently launched Twitteraccount.

He used Twitter to announce the tour Thursday morning.

“Hey Internet: I’m headed to your town on a half-assed comedy &music tour,” he wrote, sending followers to teamcoco.com fortickets.

He quickly sent a second message noting that teamcoco.com had beenjammed with too much traffic and later announced that the tour willbe adding a second show in both new York and Chicago.

“I’ll be doing all Liza Minneli songs,” he wrote.

American Express is sponsoring the tour and ticket prices willstart at $39.50.

“It promises to be a night of music, comedy, hugging, and theoccasional awkward silence,” the organizers said.
