Is Twitter gearing up for an Android app? – Android and Me

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

I get a lot of Android-related questions from my geek friends and the top one has to be, “What is the best Twitter client for Android?” A new unofficial Twitter app is launched every week on the Android Market, so my answer varies a lot.

Why doesn’t Twitter just release their own application? Facebook and MySpace both have native Android apps. Even Orkut got the native treatment from Google.

If you look at the recent actions and statements coming out of Twitter, they could be secretly planning an Android app. Actually, I think most of us would be shocked to learn that Twitter isn’t working on an app.

The story goes all the way back to last year when TechCrunch posted a leaked Twitter roadmap that gave us a preview of their future. it comes as no surprise really, but Twitter wants to rule the online world (like Facebook and Google) by becoming the first with a billion members so they can become the pulse of the planet.

If Twitter really wants to be the pulse of the planet, then location will be key. they updated their mobile site last year and turned on location in February. Based on what every other company is doing, a native application is the next logical step after creating a mobile site with location (See Buzz, Facebook, Foursquare, Gowalla, etc.).

Biz Stone, the Co-founder of Twitter, talked about the importance of location in a recent blog post.

“A recent burst of interest in location sharing applications, games, and services has many Twitter users excited about appending geographic data to some of their tweets. there are many ways location data can be useful when paired with tweets. People who choose to add this additional layer of context help make Twitter a richer information network for all of us—location data can make tweets more useful.”Biz StoneCo-founder of Twitter

Mr. Stone is correct when he says, “location data can make tweets more useful” but I think he really meant more valuable (as in $$$).

It is going to be awhile before we learn Twitter’s full monetization strategy, but location based ads (or just location data) are sure to play a key role. Twitter knows most of their users are tweeting from GPS-enabled mobile devices and they want to capture that valuable data. Developing a native Android application will allow Twitter to set the new benchmark for the Twitter experience.

Twitter also just announced their @anywhere framework (which is just a few lines of javascript) that could easily be ported to Android as an intent and tie in with countless other apps (Amazon, eBay, YouTube, digg) to expand their reach. just like Facebook, I bet we could see Twitter directly implemented into a future version of the Android operating system.

Does it sound plausible yet? Would you leave your favorite Twitter client to use the official app? I bet a million of you would at least try it.

If you want to play around with the new location features of the mobile site, check out How To Tweet with Your Location to learn how you can turn it on. I’ve uploaded some screens below that show the latest version of the mobile website that uses location.

p.s. speaking of native apps, how do I get an invite to the beta for the digg app?

New Free Service Filters Twitter Spam – Donna's SecurityFlash

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Spamdetector sniffs out spammer accounts, which Twitter then deletes

Researchers recently launched a free spam-filtering service for Twitter that flags offenders for the microblogging service, which, in turn, removes the offending accounts.

The Spamdetector service crawls Twitter, using heuristics to detect spam accounts. Gianluca Stringhini, the researcher heading up the service, says the tool has a low false-positive rate.

“Around a year ago, we started observing these [social] networks, looking for malicious traffic…spammers show a very different behavior compared to real users, and therefore we were able to build a system that can detect them in a reliable way,” says Stringhini, a researcher at the University of California-Santa Barbara.

Twitter already offers its users a button for reporting possible spam, but it relies on the user to spot suspicious tweets. The social network last week also added a new service that detects malicious URLs in an effort to quell the rise in spam and phishing on the network. it ultimately will scan all URLs before they hit the Twitter feed, but initially is doing so only for URLs sent via Twitter direct messages [DMs] and email notifications about DMs.

To be sure, abuse on Twitter is on the rise: One in eight Twitter accounts was found to be suspicious, malicious, or suspended last year, according to a recent report from Barracuda Networks. And Twitter itself currently finds 3 to 4 percent of accounts to be malicious, according to Barracuda’s data.

Lohan sparks swine flu fear on Twitter

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan sparked fears on Twitter that she had contracted swine flu.

The Mean Girls star posted a note on her twitter page last week asking fans, “What are the symptoms of Swine Flu?”.

“I never said I have it or anything, I was just reaching out to ask because everyone here may know different things about it. Isn’t this what Twitter is for? I don’t (know if I have it) and my doctor is coming now. I didn’t Google it bc (because) this seemed more convenient,” hollywood.com quoted Lohan as saying.

Lohan wrote, “Achey? my friend had it and I am sick and I’m now concerned!!!!”

The actress played down fears for her health after receiving messages from fans, but admitted she had asked a doctor for a check-up.

Twitter Flies the Coop

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Twitter has announced it will be rolling out @anywhere, a new platform that will allow certain partner Web sites — including Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), Bing, Citysearch, Digg and eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) — to link to Twitter.

The new service will let Twitter users send and receive messages while they are on a partner site. it will also allow users to follow a string of related tweets without leaving the site. The idea behind the service is to allow partners to better integrate their own conversations and product positioning with Twitter.

The @anywhere functionality can be implemented with a few lines of Javascript code.

Twitter CEO Evan Williams announced the @anywhere platform during his keynote address at the South by Southwest interactive conference under way in Austin this week.

‘Our Open Technology Platform’

The company elaborated on it in a blog post, although it didn’t provide a timeframe for rollout.

The post provided examples of how @anywhere could be used: following a New York Times journalist via her byline, tweeting about a video without leaving YouTube, or discovering new Twitter accounts on the Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO) homepage.

Besides Amazon, Bing, Citysearch, Digg and eBay, initial participating sites include AdAge, The Huffington Post, Meebo, MSNBC.com, The new York Times (NYSE: NYT), Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM), Yahoo and YouTube.

The Facebook Connect Model

Twitter’s new feature is being likened to Facebook Connect — a set of APIs that allow Facebook members to log onto third-party Web sites, applications, mobile devices and gaming systems with their Facebook identity.

Like Facebook Connect, @anywhere will break down communication barriers across the various social media sites and portals people frequent, Rob Ungar, an account executive at Widmeyer Communications, told TechNewsWorld.

“It’s going to make it easier to keep the conversation going rather than having to manage so many different identities to engage around a piece of content,” Ungar said. “Right now, people can make comments on one site, of course, but they have to repost on Twitter. this will make it easier for people to share content and promote a dialogue, which is something that Twitter is very good at.”

If it’s integrated with blogging sites like WordPress or Blogger, @anywhere will ratchet up the “intra-site” dialogue that much more, he added.

Plus for Marketing

The new service will also assist marketers in building a brand or promoting a product, Nichole Goodyear, CEO of Brickfish, told TechNewsWorld. “It will have the ability to bring people into a conversation about something they might otherwise not be aware of.”

Consider a product review posted on Amazon, for example.

“Studies have shown people tend to buy products that are recommended by friends or people they know,” said Goodyear. “Reading tweets about a product review that links to the actual page would facilitate sales of the product.”

Twitter China in the works, says Dorsey

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

A discussion of social media and digital activism took place in New York on Monday evening, in which Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei asked Twitter creator Jack Dorsey whether we should expect there to ever be a Chinese-language version of Twitter’s service.

“Is it possible to provide a Chinese access on Twitter?” Ai asked Dorsey. “I need a clear answer, yes or no.”

“I would say yes. It’s just a matter of time,” responded Dorsey over teleconference.

Dorsey admits, of course, that the channel may not materialize for some time due to technical and legal issues.

Access to Twitter in China remains blocked, in line with the government’s strict censorship regulations. Though some users can still occasionally break across the government’s firewall, Ai believes it is imperative that Twitter offer a Chinese-language version of the site to make the service more useful for those who do not speak English.

“In China, we cannot see YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter, and very soon, maybe not see Google,” Ai said. “Basically it is society that forbids any flow of information and freedom of speech.”

Ai’s concerns are very real and timely.

Tension between the Chinese government and Google reached new heights last Friday when Li Yizhong, Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology, responded to the search engine company’s threat to exit the country after discovering anti-activist email attacks originating from China.

“If you want to do something that disobeys Chinese law and regulations, you are unfriendly, you are irresponsible and you will have to pay the consequences,” Li said.

Though Google may not even be the number one search engine in China, Ai understands that losing Google means losing a major part of the Web and represents another large blow to basic rights.

@Platform – Twitter announces @Platform for web publishers

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Twitter just announced @Platform, a new way for websites to embed and use Twitter to ultimately bring more views back to them. it allows readers to follow an author directly from an article page, without having to go to Twitter. the Twitter folks know that they need a better way than apps to distribute their service and it looks like this is it. Twitter has already found a number of high-profile partners like Amazon, YouTube, Yahoo, Bing, Digg, eBay and more – but anyone should be able to add Twitter to a website. We’re still live with Twitter at SXSW.

Twitter announces @anywhere: expanding tweets to more sites …

Twitter is expanding its integration tentacles by breaking ties with the APIs that developers have been using to incorporate the short messages into other sites and platforms.

Today, at the SXSW conference in Austin, Twitter announced @anywhere, a coming-soon feature that will allow site owners to drop integrate Twitter by dropping in a few lines of javascript, rather than implement Twitter’s APIs. In a blog post announcing the feature, Twitter writes:

Imagine being able to follow a New York Times journalist directly from her byline, tweet about a video without leaving YouTube, and discover new Twitter accounts while visiting the Yahoo! home page—and that’s just the beginning. Twitter has proven to be compelling in a variety of ways. with @anywhere, web site owners and operators will be able to offer visitors more value with less heavy lifting.

A handful of sites will launch when Twitter flips the switch, though it didn’t say when that might be. Weeks? Months? the blog post by co-founder Biz Stone only used words like “soon” and phrases like “when we’re ready to launch.”

Upon launch, however, sites participating in @anywhere will be Amazon, AdAge, Bing, Citysearch, Digg, eBay, the Huffington Post, Meebo, MSNBC.com, the New York Times, Salesforce.com, Yahoo!, and YouTube.
